I tried this and the midi out did work to drive QSynth, however QSynth only seems to have a stereo output, so all instruments are mixed together which is no good. However, multiple notes can be selected and changed at the same time.Īnother not very appealing option is to run fluidsynth (I'd probably run via QSynth) as a standalone program and then route midi from an Ardour midi track to it, then the re-route audio from QSynth back into an Ardour audio track. As far as I can see you must enter notes as channel 1, and then use the "c" key to bring up a menu to change the channel. As far as I can see you cannot have 2 notes at the same pitch with different midi channels overlapping each other. However, this seems a bit cumbersome because you have notes for 16 instruments in the same track and its is difficult to tell them apart - you must hover a mouse over the note to see what channel it is. Hence, you can have up to 16 instruments on one Ardour midi track. If you use Calf-fluidsynth you can select different instruments in a single SF2 file.

Except for this!Īn Ardour midi track will handle 16 midi-channels.

With other Linux sequencers like Qtractor, Soundgarden, Audacity, and Muze, it was like on Sonar, AFAIR, only with a different MIDI sound, but they had other limitations, so Ardour was better for me. It surprises me if it's not possible with Ardour. It was a small SF, only 4 MB, and of course most of its 128 instruments sounded awfull, but it was convenient for getting a quick "overview" of the MIDI file, especially when it was created by another, and afterward I could always change the sound. When I imported a MIDI file, I didn't need to select this synth for each track, and also, its tracks kept their instrument settings.

Unless Fluidplug really is different in this respect.īefore I got Linux I used a sequencer called "Sonar" on Windows, and my soundcard (SB Live) had a software synth with a standard 128 traditional instruments soundfont installed by default. Pablo wrote:even if I wouldn't have to bother with manually loading the GM soundfont in each fluidplug instance, I would still have to plug one instance per track, so three of them in my test case, am I right?
